Pioneering Oregon Wineries

Stonewood Winery (1977)

Stonewood Winery was the dream of Victor and Nancy Winquist. In 1972 the Winquist’s, from Seattle, decided to build a winery in Oregon specializing in Pinot Noir and sparkling wine. They spent several years in Napa Valley studying viticulture and winery operations.

In 1975 the Winquist’s purchased 75 acres west of Salem in Spring Valley, which had a small walnut orchard dating back to the early 1900’s.

1976 was spent clearing the land. The plan was to build the winery and plant 20 acres in 1977, and plant another 40 acres in 1978. The history of Stonewood winery is not complete. It’s not known how many acres were originally planted or why the winery was not built.

Fun Fact

The winery was never built. Bethel Heights eventually acquired the vineyard.
