Aron Hess (1967-2013)

Rex Hill VineyardsAron Hess started as a cellar hand at Flynn Vineyards in 1997. He then worked a crush at Evesham Wood. In 1998 he joined Rex Hill Vineyards as an enologist and became head winemaker in 2002. In 2005 he joined 12th & Maple Wine Company in Dundee as head winemaker. In 2010 he began working as a winemaking consultant.

In 2000 he and his then wife Pam Walden started Daedalus Cellars making small lots of premium wines. In 2002 a second label, Jezebel Wines, was added.

The winery’s name Daedalus comes from Greek mythology. Hess’s favorite writer was James Joyce. Stephen Daedalus appeared as Joyce’s alter- ego in “A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man”. Hess passed away January 2013.
