Pioneering Oregon Vineyards

Saucy Vineyard
(1971-1987)

Tom and Sharon Saucy purchased ten (10) acres of land on Worden Hill Road near Dundee in 1971.  By 1976 they had planted a nine acre vineyard and built a house.

The vineyard was planted to Pinot Noir, Gewurtztraminer, Riesling, Chardonnay, and a small amount of Cabernet Sauvignon.  Most of the young cuttings were purchased from Wente Nursery in California. Harvested grapes were sold to Erath Vineyards and Oak Knoll Winery.

The couple had caught the wine bug a few years earlier.  Prior to buying the property they had joined a wine making club and also had relatives in Switzerland who made wine.  Tom worked as an engineer at Tekronix in Portland where coincidentally Ron Vulsteke, co-founder of Oak Knoll Winery, and Dick Erath also worked.  At lunch time wine was the main topic of conversation.

Saucy Vineyards was sold and when bought was renamed Crumbled Rock WinesThe Saucy’s eventually sold the property in 1987 to Gerrard Koschal and Julia Staigers who rename the vineyard “Juliard Vineyard” and started Crumbled Rock Winery.
